Chapter 8 - The Mask Shatters

On the second day of the hearing, Mark took the witness stand in a desperate attempt to salvage his reputation.

His attorney led him through a carefully rehearsed series of questions, allowing Mark to portray himself as a hardworking, stressed father who had merely lost his patience once.

"Mr. Vance," Hayes asked smoothly. "Do you love your son?"

"More than life itself," Mark said, dabbing at the corner of his eye with a white handkerchief. "I would never intentionally harm Leo. Everything I did was to teach him structure and discipline."

Then Eleanor stepped up to cross-examine him.

She walked slowly toward the witness stand, holding a thick stack of printed text messages.

"Mr. Vance," Eleanor began, her voice soft and conversational. "You testified that the incident in the kitchen was an isolated, accidental occurrence. Is that correct?"

"Yes," Mark replied, smiling warmly at the judge. "I was stressed, and the milk spilled, and I reacted too quickly."

"I see," Eleanor said. She pulled a page from her stack. "Let's talk about March 14th of last year. You sent your wife a text message saying, 'I'm sorry I threw the wooden chair at the wall near Leo's head. I was tired.' Was that also an accident?"

Mark’s smile faltered. "I... I was speaking metaphorically—"

"And on August 22nd," Eleanor continued, pulling another sheet. "'I'm sorry I locked Leo in the garage during the thunderstorm. He needed to learn not to be afraid of the dark.' Was that reasonable parental discipline, Mr. Vance?"

Mark’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. His fingers gripped the wooden edge of the witness box so hard his knuckles turned white.

"You're taking those messages out of context!" Mark snapped, his voice losing its polished tone.

"Am I?" Eleanor leaned in closer. "Let's talk about the night of your arrest. When your wife called 911 from behind a locked door, you said, 'Tell them you misunderstood.' Why did you want her to lie to law enforcement, Mr. Vance?"

"I didn't want her to lie!" Mark shouted, his voice echoing loudly off the marble walls of the courtroom. "She was overreacting like she always does! She’s hysterical, ungrateful, and completely incapable of raising a boy!"

The entire courtroom went dead silent.

Mark stood in the witness box, breathing heavily, his eyes wild, his fists clenched, his true nature fully exposed before the entire gallery.

Judge Sterling looked down at Mark from her elevated bench, her eyes cold as ice.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Sterling said, her voice dripping with absolute condemnation. "You may step down."
