Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Secrets

While the male officer sat on the living room sofa with Leo, examining his swollen, bruised right wrist and offering him a stuffed animal from the patrol car, the sergeant took my statement in the kitchen.
She took photos of the spilled milk, the open drawer, and the red contusions forming on Leo’s skin.
"We are arresting your husband for domestic battery and child endangerment, Mrs. Vance," Sergeant Miller told me, her voice compassionate. "An emergency protective order will be issued tonight. He will not be allowed within five hundred feet of this home or your son."
I watched through the front window as Mark was led down the driveway in handcuffs, his head bowed, his tailored suit jacket wrinkled against the metal restraints.
As the police cruiser pulled away into the night, the house fell into a heavy, unnatural silence.
I carried Leo upstairs and laid him down on his bed. I sat beside him, gently running my fingers through his dark hair as he stared at the ceiling with wide, hollow eyes.
"Leo," I said softly. "What happened when Mommy was at work on Tuesdays and Thursdays?"
Leo swallowed hard, his little throat working silently before he spoke.
"He... he made rules, Mommy," Leo whispered, his voice shaking. "He said if I made any noise or left my toys on the rug, he would throw them in the trash. He told me that if I cried, he’d give me a real reason to cry. And he said if I told you... you would leave both of us because I was bad."
My chest shattered into a thousand pieces.
All those Tuesdays and Thursdays when I had worked late at the clinic, believing I was building a future for our family, Mark had been systematically terrorizing our son. He had trained Leo to conceal his fear, teaching him that my absence was a punishment and his suffering was a secret.

I pulled Leo into my arms, holding him tight as tears soaked through my shirt.
"He will never lay a hand on you again, Leo," I vowed into his hair, my heart hardening into pure steel. "I give you my life as a promise."
