Chapter 4 - The Legal Fortress

By eight o'clock the following morning, I was sitting inside the glass-walled office of Eleanor Vance—a formidable family law attorney recommended by a domestic violence hotline advocate.
Spread out across her mahogany desk were the emergency police reports, photographs of Leo’s injuries, and a medical assessment from the pediatric urgent care unit confirming a sprained wrist and soft tissue bruising.
"Mark’s legal team has already posted his bail," Eleanor informed me, setting down her pen. "His attorney is Gregory Hayes—one of the highest-paid defense lawyers in the state. They are going to claim that Mark was using reasonable parental discipline to prevent Leo from grabbing a sharp kitchen utensil."
"A kitchen utensil?" I blurted out, outrage surging through my veins. "He was reaching for a spoon to eat cereal!"
"I know, Sarah," Eleanor said gently. "And we know the truth. But in a high-stakes custody battle, men like Mark rely on wealth, status, and historical precedent. You stayed with him for eight years despite his temper. His defense will argue that you only raised these allegations during a marital dispute to gain full financial control of the estate."
"What do I need to do?" I asked, leaning forward, resting my hands flat on her desk.
"We need a complete paper trail," Eleanor stated clearly. "Every bank statement, every text message, every voice mail, every medical record. If Mark has ever sent you an apologetic text after an outburst, I need it printed."
I spent the next six hours sitting at Eleanor's conference table, digging through eight years of digital archives on my phone.
And there it was—a pattern spanning nearly a decade.
Hundreds of text messages from Mark: I’m sorry for losing my temper last night. Work was crazy, I didn't mean to shout. I brought you flowers, please forgive me.

He had left a trail of his own guilt across eight years of digital memory.
"This is gold," Eleanor said, scanning the printed logs. "We file for a permanent restraining order and an ex-parte sole custody petition tomorrow morning."
