Chapter 6 - THE RECORD HE HAD BEEN BUILDING

While applying for a protective order, I learned Greg had been preparing his own version of my life for months.

He emailed relatives after arguments, describing me as forgetful, unstable, and accident-prone. He told my former supervisor that stress made me unreliable. In messages to Rachel, he pretended to worry that I might hurt myself while leaving the house alone.

He had even accompanied me to two earlier medical appointments and told doctors I frequently lost balance.

I thought he was embarrassing me.

He was constructing a record.

The plan was not sophisticated enough to create a legal guardianship or take away my rights. But it could damage my credibility during a divorce. If I said he attacked me, he could point to years of messages describing falls, panic, and instability.

The broken toes were meant to fit the pattern.

Greg expected me to repeat the fall story, return home in a cast, miss the new job, and become financially dependent again. If I later accused him, he would say the stress of losing work had made me vindictive.

Dr. Morgan’s notes disrupted that timeline.

So did the clinic hallway.

Nurse Kelly had heard him instruct me to remember the accident story. Security footage showed him reaching for my arm and changing his explanation when challenged.

The medical record did not prove every previous incident.

It did something equally important.

It documented the moment his pattern stopped working.
