Chapter 4 - REMEMBER HOW IT HAPPENED

Dr. Morgan documented each fracture, the bruising pattern, the delayed treatment, and my description of the assault. Nurse Kelly photographed the swelling with my consent and contacted the clinic’s domestic-violence liaison.

They did not promise that a scan would prove every word.

They recorded what medicine could support.

Before I left the examination room, Dr. Morgan asked whether Greg had access to my phone, money, or identification.

“Yes.”

“Do you have somewhere safe to go?”

“My sister’s.”

“Does he know the address?”

“He knows where she lives.”

Nurse Kelly began making calls quietly.

When the medical boot was secured, I moved into the hallway on crutches. Greg stood near the nurses’ station, impatient and angry.

“Why was everyone whispering?”

“The fractures are worse than I thought.”

He stepped close.

“Then remember how they happened.”

The threat was quiet enough that he believed only I could hear it.

He was wrong.

Dr. Morgan had stepped into the hallway behind me.

Greg reached for my arm.

She blocked him.

“Do not touch my patient.”

His expression shifted instantly.

First he said I had fallen while carrying groceries.

Then he said I had kicked the cabinet during an argument.

When Nurse Kelly reached for the phone, he claimed I was unstable and trying to punish him for discovering an affair.

Each explanation contradicted the one before it.

I kept both hands around the crutch grips.

For once, I did not need to convince him, calm him, or repair his version of events.

The elevator opened at the end of the corridor.

Officer Reed and Officer Lane stepped out.

They walked directly toward the nurses’ station.

“Greg Miller?”

My husband turned toward me.

The cast had not silenced me.

It had placed his name inside a record he could no longer edit.
