Chapter 9 - THE AUNT WITH THE PERFECT HOUSE

Caroline Whitmore lived in a large colonial house near Lexington.

She had no children, an expensive garden, and a reputation within the family for practical generosity. After Emily’s father died, Caroline brought meals and occasionally took Emily shopping. The girl liked her well enough.

That made Richard’s alternative proposal harder to dismiss.

Aunt Caroline had a clean home.

She had time.

She had money.

She could offer Emily a stable room while Walter recovered and Richard’s own guardianship petition remained under investigation.

The child advocate examined the proposal carefully.

Then she asked Caroline when she last spoke with Sarah.

Caroline answered that Sarah had died two years earlier.

The advocate showed her the video.

Caroline became visibly upset.

She said she knew nothing about Sarah’s survival.

That was plausible.

Then financial investigators found Caroline received an unusual payment from North Shore Advisory shortly after Sarah vanished.

Caroline described it as consulting compensation.

There were no meaningful deliverables attached.

Another payment arrived six months later.

Then another.

Caroline admitted Richard helped pay her mortgage during a difficult period.

She insisted he did not buy her silence because she had no secret to keep.

The child advocate did not accuse her of organizing Sarah’s disappearance. She concluded only that Caroline was not sufficiently independent of Richard to serve as an unquestioned alternative while the investigation continued.

Emily remained with Walter and June under supervision.

The immediate danger of transfer receded.

Then Sarah contacted the advocate directly.

She did not use Emily’s phone.

She called through an attorney in another state.

Her name was Sarah Whitmore.

She wanted to appear voluntarily, obtain independent medical evaluation, and resume legal contact with her daughter.

She also wanted protection from Richard and Oliver.

Judge Ellis was informed.

The court scheduled an urgent status conference.

But before Sarah could travel, a dark SUV appeared outside the temporary apartment where she was staying.

Her attorney reported it to police.

Sarah moved again.

Emily received another message that evening.

I’m still coming, baby. I just need to make sure I get there.

She showed Walter.

He read the words and began crying.

“I’ll tell them everything,” he said.

Emily looked at him.

“Even the bad parts?”

May you like

Walter nodded.

“Especially those.”
