Chapter 13 - THE PERSON WALTER CHOSE

Walter’s testimony completed an important part of the timeline.
He confirmed seeing Sarah alive at the lake. He admitted receiving her later letter. He described Richard’s instructions not to tell Emily about the phone call and explained how he eventually came to believe his son might be lying.
His testimony damaged his own credibility.
It also prevented Richard from claiming that every accusation originated only with Sarah.
Walter had known the family structure from the beginning.
He knew which accounts Richard controlled and which trust provisions protected Emily.
When he reviewed the recovered blue folder, he recognized several transactions he had previously approved without sufficient scrutiny. His signatures were genuine.
His understanding had been incomplete.
That distinction did not excuse his failure.
It allowed investigators to trace the financial decisions accurately.
The final missing piece came through Oliver.
Facing charges connected to the financial scheme and Sarah’s confinement, he began cooperating. He admitted arranging the lake meeting and the medical transport. He said Richard approved restricted contact and later agreed to the false death certification because restoring Sarah’s legal presence threatened the trust administration.
Oliver tried to reduce his own responsibility by claiming Richard directed everything.
The records showed a more complicated truth.
Both men benefited.
Both participated.
Hale supplied the medical documentation that made the confinement possible.
None could credibly claim the arrangement continued for two years by accident.
Investigators also established that Richard instructed staff to investigate the anonymous messages reaching Emily. He learned Sarah might be communicating with the child before filing his final guardianship petition.
That fact explained his fury when Emily raised the phone.
He did not simply fear an embarrassing video.
He knew the recording threatened the entire premise of his sworn petition.
The emotional payoff came when Walter apologized to Sarah.
They sat together in the library, the room where she once showed him her first findings. Emily was outside with June, playing in the garden.
“I saw you,” Walter said.
Sarah looked at him.
“I know.”
“I let him take you.”
“You did.”
“I was afraid the company would fall apart.”
Sarah’s face changed.
“I was afraid Emily would grow up without me.”
Walter began crying.
There was no answer that made those fears equal.
Sarah did not tell him everything was forgiven.
She took his hand.
“You can help her know the truth about what happened. That’s what I need from you now.”
Walter nodded.
May you like
For most of his life, he had chosen the family company when forced to decide where his loyalty belonged.
Now he understood that protecting the company had helped destroy the family it was supposed to serve.
