Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO INVITED SARAH

Oliver Trent had known Sarah since she was a child.

He attended family Christmas dinners, taught her to swim, and helped Richard expand Whitmore Family Holdings after Walter retired. Sarah called him Uncle Oliver when she was young, although there was no blood relationship.

Investigators asked why he invited her to the lake.

Oliver said Sarah was upset and wanted to discuss sensitive financial matters away from the office.

“Did she arrive?”

“Yes.”

“Did she bring the blue folder?”

“I believe so.”

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

He claimed Sarah left after an argument and that he returned to Boston before she disappeared.

His phone records complicated the story.

Oliver remained near the lake for nearly three hours after the time he said he departed. Richard’s phone was also in the area that evening.

Richard had told investigators he was at home.

The two men had both lied about their locations.

Walter received the news with an expression Emily’s advocate later described as grief becoming recognition.

“He always said Sarah went alone.”

The case widened further when investigators reconstructed the lake property’s ownership. It belonged to a private company associated with Oliver, but Richard had practical access. The service road mentioned in the death-certification file led to a maintenance building on the property.

A search uncovered old medical supplies and a temporary bed in a storage room.

The materials alone did not establish Sarah was held there.

Then a former caretaker came forward.

He remembered seeing an ambulance-style van at the service entrance the night Sarah vanished. A woman was being moved on a stretcher, and one man told him she had suffered a fall.

The caretaker recognized Oliver.

He did not see Richard clearly.

The new objective became finding the vehicle.

Records led to a medical transport contractor associated with Dr. Martin Hale’s Vermont facility.

The same physician who later certified Sarah’s death.

The pattern no longer looked like an accidental drowning followed by a paperwork error.

It looked like a medical transfer converted into a death.

The chapter’s final clue came from the recovered laptop.

Sarah had enabled automatic backups to a private cloud account.

Someone repeatedly tried to access it after her disappearance.

The most recent attempt occurred six weeks before Emily’s hearing.

Richard’s office internet connection was used.

He was still looking for whatever Sarah had saved.

And the blue folder was still missing.
