Chapter 3 - THE MONEY FROM HER FATHER

Brooks Development Holdings belonged to Amanda’s father, Charles Brooks, and her older brother, Evan. Amanda owned a minority share inherited from her grandfather but had never worked in the company. The business developed shopping centers, medical offices, and suburban housing across three states. Ryan had become a consultant to Brooks Development eighteen months earlier, six months after he and Amanda began dating.

Until the wedding collapsed, Amanda considered those two parts of her life unrelated.

The cashier’s check proved otherwise.

Charles insisted he had never authorized a payment to Melissa. Evan said the same. Their controller found the transaction within an hour. The $50,000 came from a discretionary acquisition account accessible by several senior employees.

Authorization:

RYAN KELLER — EXTERNAL STRATEGY CONSULTANT.

Ryan had been given limited spending authority for confidential site negotiations.

He used it to pay his wife.

Charles became furious, but Amanda noticed his anger centered on the misuse of company funds rather than the secret marriage. “Did you know he was married?” she asked.

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

Evan’s did not.

Amanda turned toward her brother. “Evan?”

He rubbed his jaw. “I knew there had been someone before you.”

“Someone?”

“I didn’t know they were still married.”

“How did you know Melissa existed?”

Ryan had listed an emergency contact when Brooks Development first hired him. The contact was Melissa Keller. Evan noticed because Amanda was already dating Ryan and asked about it. Ryan said Melissa was an estranged former spouse whose name remained on old insurance paperwork because their divorce was messy.

Evan accepted the explanation.

Amanda felt anger climb. “And you never thought to mention that?”

“You told everyone to stop investigating your relationships.”

That part was true. After Sophie’s father died five years earlier, Amanda’s family became aggressively protective. Charles ordered background checks on two men she dated. Amanda found out and threatened to cut contact if they did it again.

Ryan benefited from that boundary.

He knew her family would hesitate to investigate.

The first plausible explanation emerged: Ryan was a financially desperate married man who met Amanda, saw access to wealth, and lied his way into a second life. The $50,000 check represented one final attempt to preserve the scheme.

It was ugly.

It was also simple enough to believe.

Then Melissa contradicted it.

“Ryan wasn’t broke when he left us.”

She produced bank statements showing more than $900,000 moved through Ryan’s consulting company during the year before his supposed financial collapse. The money came from several clients, including Brooks Development.

Yet Ryan told Melissa creditors were closing in.

Where had the money gone?

Amanda’s family controller pulled Ryan’s invoices. He had earned roughly $340,000 from Brooks Development legitimately.

The rest came from three entities Amanda did not recognize.

Granite Bridge Consulting.

Harlow Municipal Partners.

Westmere Holdings.

Evan recognized the last one.

Westmere was a shell company Brooks Development occasionally used in land acquisitions to prevent sellers from inflating prices once they learned a wealthy developer was interested.

Ryan should not have been receiving personal payments from it.

The payments totaled $620,000.

Charles stopped shouting.

Amanda noticed.

“What is Westmere paying him for?”

Her father said he did not know.

The controller searched deeper.

Westmere transferred money to Ryan under invoices labeled LOCAL RELATIONS / PROJECT HARBOR.

Project Harbor was Brooks Development’s largest pending acquisition, a riverfront redevelopment worth almost $180 million.

Ryan had been negotiating it for months.

Amanda asked why her fiancé needed hundreds of thousands in extra payments to work on a deal he was already paid to manage.

No one had a clean answer.

Then Detective Cole received the forensic preview of Ryan’s phone.

Most wedding-week messages were ordinary.

One thread had been deleted repeatedly.

Technicians recovered fragments.

RYAN: If Melissa shows up, Harbor dies.

UNKNOWN: Then make sure she doesn’t.

RYAN: Amanda can never know why I chose her.

The simple explanation collapsed.

Ryan had not merely chosen Amanda because she was wealthy.

May you like

There was something about marrying her that protected a business deal.

And Melissa apparently knew enough to destroy it.
