Chapter 10 - THE PERSON WHO WANTED THE WEDDING TO FAIL

Ryan refused to explain his reaction during the monitored meeting, but police recovered enough deleted messages from his phone to identify another thread connected to the anonymous email.
The contact was saved only as M.
At first Amanda assumed Melissa.
It was not.
The number belonged to Martin Shaw, an analyst employed by Northridge Urban Partners.
Martin had worked with Ryan for four years tracking Harbor land values, city permits, and Brooks Development financing. He was also the person who prepared the calculation showing Ryan’s potential $8 million success bonus.
Martin denied sending the wedding email.
Then Detective Cole showed him metadata linking the anonymous message to a privacy service account he purchased.
He asked for a lawyer.
The real motive behind the exposure emerged through Martin’s cooperation. Northridge had grown suspicious of Ryan months earlier because he began structuring the Grant and Brooks access corridor through entities Northridge did not control. Ryan intended to use the assembled land position to negotiate a second private payout after Harbor closed.
He was cheating his outside backers too.
Martin discovered the dual marriage situation while conducting due diligence on Melissa’s trust. He reported it to Northridge’s managing partner.
They did not tell Amanda.
They did not tell Melissa.
They held it as leverage over Ryan.
Everyone in the story had discovered information and first asked what it was worth.
The anonymous wedding email came only after Ryan threatened to cut Northridge out of the access corridor. Martin decided blowing up the wedding would destroy Ryan’s path to Amanda’s property before Ryan could close around them.
He did not do it to protect either woman.
He did it to protect Northridge.
The truth made Amanda almost laugh from exhaustion.
Even the person who exposed Ryan had a financial motive.
Martin provided the next major connection. Ryan had a contingency plan if the wedding failed. He called it Route B.
Route B involved forcing Brooks Development to purchase the Grant parcels and Amanda’s access property through eminent-domain cooperation with the city or alternative easements. Northridge would then litigate around the corridor long enough to pressure a settlement.
That explained why Ryan was not simply fleeing after the ceremony collapsed.
He still had economic routes available.
The chapter’s bigger reveal came from a spreadsheet Martin surrendered.
PROJECT HARBOR OUTCOMES:
A — Marriage / Dual Control
B — Forced Assembly / Litigation
C — Environmental Hold / Distress Purchase
Route C terrified Charles.
If environmental litigation halted Harbor, Brooks Development could default on acquisition loans. Northridge could then purchase distressed surrounding assets cheaply.
Ryan profited under multiple outcomes.
If the wedding succeeded, he profited from corridor control.
If it failed but Harbor continued, he profited from litigation leverage.
If Harbor collapsed, his backers profited from distressed acquisition.
He had designed himself to win whether the project lived or died.
Amanda asked what outcome Ryan preferred.
Martin answered, “A. By far.”
“Why?”
“Because it gave him control without waiting.”
Marriage was the fastest route.
Not the only one.
The chapter-ending connection came from Route C documentation. Environmental hold strategy relied on resurrecting Thomas Grant’s original contamination findings.
Those findings were real.
If Ryan released them selectively now, Harbor could be frozen.
Charles would lose hundreds of millions.
Former workers might finally obtain claims.
Amanda understood the moral complication immediately.

The same evidence Ryan intended to use as financial leverage might contain legitimate information the public should have had years earlier.
Stopping Ryan could not mean helping her father bury the truth again.
