Chapter 9 - LILY’S ROOM

Daniel changed the objective.
He stopped trying to prove his father innocent.
He wanted the complete truth before Adrian’s sale closed and before whoever controlled the security system removed the remaining evidence.
That shift made him more useful.
Thomas had built the mansion’s archive around physical habits Daniel knew from childhood. He distrusted cloud storage and labeled important files through private associations rather than obvious names. “Daniel Copy” might not mean a file with Daniel’s name. It might mean something placed inside an object connected specifically to him.
Daniel searched the library, childhood bedroom and old study.
Nothing.
Then Lily carried the clue into breakfast.
She had taken a wooden toy airplane from the nursery shelf and asked why Grandpa’s name was written underneath. Daniel turned it over.
THOMAS STELLAN / D.S. — AGE 6.
His father built the airplane for Daniel when he was six.
Daniel went to the nursery immediately.
The room had once been his childhood playroom before the mansion was renovated. Vanessa converted it for Lily when she was born but kept several antique shelves and toys for sentimental reasons.
One shelf panel was newer than the others.
Behind it was a narrow metal document box.
Vanessa stared at Daniel. “Someone has been searching this house for a year, and it was ten feet from Lily’s crib.”
That realization changed their anger into fear.
The box required two small mechanical keys.
Daniel had one without knowing it. Thomas’s old cufflink case contained a brass key he had kept as a memento after his father died. The second key was missing.
Evan believed Samuel might have received it.
He returned to his apartment and came back with a key stored in his father’s old wallet.
Both fit.
Inside the box lay Diane Cole’s internal audit, printed emails, pension-account reconciliations and a small recorder labeled FOR DANIEL ONLY.
The audit identified Adrian’s operations division as the source of the pension diversion.
But Adrian had not acted alone.
Charles Vale created vendor shells.
Three procurement executives approved false invoices.
And one senior treasury manager overrode controls allowing payments to leave the pension reserve.
Samuel Mercer.
Evan stopped reading.
“That’s not right.”
The audit contained Samuel’s own written explanation.
He discovered the first irregular transfer after it occurred. Adrian threatened to expose unrelated mistakes Samuel had made years earlier unless he processed additional transactions. Samuel complied twice, moving almost nine million dollars. Then guilt pushed him to Thomas.
Project Bridge had therefore begun not only because Samuel found fraud.
It began because Samuel confessed his own involvement.
Evan walked out of the nursery.
Daniel found him downstairs ten minutes later sitting alone in the dark family room.
“My father helped them.”
“For a while.”
“He told everyone he was framed.”
“He was framed for the full forty-eight million.”
“That doesn’t make nine million disappear.”
Daniel understood what Evan was experiencing because he had spent twelve years doing the same thing with Thomas: confusing love with acquittal.
Evan returned to the box.
The recorder contained Thomas speaking directly to Daniel.
He did not apologize for being accused unfairly.
He apologized for Bridge.
“I thought I could control the damage without telling the truth immediately. That was arrogance. Adrian stole the company because I gave him the opening.”
Thomas then said Samuel confessed before the end and tried to help expose Adrian.
“If Evan Mercer ever comes looking, do not tell him his father was innocent. Tell him his father came back.”
Evan cried quietly.
The chapter’s second reward appeared in Thomas’s final instruction.
The audit was not the most important evidence.
The original vendor authorization linking Adrian to the pension theft was stored off-site under a code Thomas called HARBOR.
Only Charles Vale knew the physical location.
Charles was dead.
But his daughter was alive.
Helen Vale had not been his only family member.
Charles had a daughter named Vanessa.

Daniel looked toward his wife.
Vanessa went completely still.
