Chapter 13 - THE MIRROR SERVER

Adrian knowing the USB location changed how Daniel viewed the old drive. If Adrian had identified it from Thomas’s office photograph, why had he not simply sent Reese to remove it months earlier? The answer had to involve access. The antique table spent years in locked estate storage, and Sentinel’s compromised technicians could reach cameras but not necessarily physical rooms without drawing attention.
The birthday party created the first legitimate reason to move the table into an open area.
Adrian’s remote access at 3:11 therefore had a purpose.
He was checking whether the USB was still there.
Lily found it before his person could.
Rebecca pressed Sentinel for every historical connection from AST-EXEC-04. Most sessions targeted archive rooms and Thomas’s study, but one recurring destination was not inside the mansion at all.
A server endpoint labeled STELLAN-MIRROR-01.
The system no longer appeared on Daniel’s home network.
Evan recognized the naming convention immediately. Stellan Systems used mirror servers to create encrypted duplicate backups of executive project drives. A special USB bearing the corporate logo often functioned not merely as storage but as an authentication token.
Daniel looked at the old device.
“The files aren’t the point.”
“The key is,” Evan said.
Thomas’s USB may have been one half of a credential needed to unlock a mirror backup elsewhere.
That explained why Adrian cared about the physical drive even after he presumably knew some documents existed.
If the mirror survived, it could contain original server records rather than copied papers vulnerable to forgery arguments.
Diane Cole remembered the mirror system. One backup server was removed from Stellan headquarters two days before bankruptcy and sent to a disaster-recovery facility in Connecticut.
Public bankruptcy inventories listed it as destroyed hardware.
Diane did not believe that because Thomas had personally ordered the server relocated under Project Bridge.
Rebecca traced the recovery facility through old insurance records.
The company had been acquired twice, but archived inventory still showed one sealed Stellan Systems server cabinet in long-term legal hold.
Nobody had claimed it.
For twelve years.
Access required a physical corporate token and Thomas’s executive phrase.
Daniel had the token.
The phrase seemed impossible until he listened again to Thomas’s FOR DANIEL ONLY recording.
At the end, after discussing Samuel and Adrian, Thomas said something Daniel originally interpreted as emotional advice.
“When you don’t know which version of the story is true, start where the numbers broke.”
Evan entered the phrase.
The server opened.
The mirror contained original accounting databases, executive email archives and Bridge version history captured automatically through the night of March 17.
For the first time, they did not have post-bankruptcy copies.
They had the system as it existed before the collapse.
The final pieces connected quickly.
Adrian authorized twenty-nine million dollars of false vendor payments.
Charles Vale created entities receiving another nineteen million.
Samuel Mercer processed nine million under pressure, then created internal flags that preserved traces.
Thomas approved Project Bridge after Samuel confessed.
Helen Vale accepted temporary Northstar control and never resigned.
Her resignation document appeared on the mirror as a draft created on Charles’s laptop at 11:39 p.m. on March 17.
At 11:44, Charles printed it.
At 11:48, he uploaded the forged notarization.
At 12:06, Adrian amended Northstar control.
Then came the message that completed the original betrayal.
12:09 a.m.
FROM ADRIAN STELLAN TO CHARLES VALE:
HE WON’T AGREE. PROCEED ANYWAY. VENDOR CALLS GO OUT AT SIX.
The simultaneous vendor defaults had been planned before Thomas left the meeting.
Adrian knew Bridge would trigger scrutiny.
He responded by turning a temporary audit mechanism into real bankruptcy before Thomas could expose him.
The mirror also explained why Thomas stayed silent afterward.
At 4:22 a.m., Charles emailed him draft criminal allegations accusing Thomas and Samuel of fraudulent asset shielding. He threatened to release them unless Thomas stopped challenging Northstar’s control.
Thomas replied:
YOU’RE BURYING THE COMPANY TO SAVE ADRIAN.
Charles answered:
WE ARE MAKING SURE DANIEL DOESN’T HAVE TO VISIT HIS FATHER IN FEDERAL PRISON.
Thomas yielded.
Daniel read the exchange without speaking.
His father had made a reckless decision.
Then his brother used that mistake to steal everything.
The story was almost complete.
Now Daniel knew exactly what he had to do.
Not save Thomas’s reputation.
May you like
Not protect the Stellan name.
Put the mirror in front of people who had no reason to protect either.
