Chapter 11 - THE FAMILY BOARD

Daniel decided secrecy had become the enemy.

He called an emergency Stellan family foundation meeting at the mansion and invited Adrian, Asteron counsel, Rebecca, Vanessa and two independent trustees. He did not tell Adrian about Harbor H-17. He told him only that evidence related to Project Bridge had been found inside Thomas’s old furniture.

Adrian came.

That alone told Daniel the evidence frightened him.

The meeting began politely. Adrian described Thomas as a brilliant founder who made catastrophic decisions under pressure. He acknowledged Project Bridge but insisted he had taken control of Northstar only after Thomas’s lenders demanded asset sales.

Rebecca placed Helen Vale’s forged resignation on the table.

Adrian barely reacted.

Then she placed Walter Dean’s missing notary-journal page beside it.

Still nothing.

Daniel turned on Thomas’s recording from March 17.

Adrian’s face changed.

The room heard Thomas say, “Helen controls Northstar, not you.”

Then Charles’s reply that Helen had resigned.

Adrian stopped the performance.

“You have no idea what Thomas was doing.”

Daniel answered calmly. “Then explain it.”

“He was moving assets while insolvent.”

“To trigger an audit.”

“That’s the story Mercer fed him after Mercer stole from the pension.”

Evan stepped into the room from the adjoining gallery.

Adrian looked genuinely surprised.

“Samuel confessed to the nine million,” Evan said. “We know.”

That removed one of Adrian’s most reliable defenses.

Daniel then placed Diane Cole’s audit on the table.

Adrian stood.

“My lawyers will review anything you think you have.”

“You’re leaving?”

“I’m not participating in an ambush.”

Daniel nodded toward the door. “Go.”

Adrian stopped.

He had expected Daniel to trap him emotionally.

Daniel’s willingness to let him leave made him uncertain.

That was the real trap.

As Adrian exited, the mansion security system flagged an administrator session.

Remote access.

Archive room.

Adrian’s presence at the meeting had drawn whoever monitored him into action.

Vanessa watched the local tablet. “Someone thinks the evidence is upstairs.”

Police waiting nearby moved toward the archive wing.

They caught not Colin Reese but Asteron’s deputy general counsel, Martin Hale, using an emergency Sentinel credential. Hale carried a portable drive-wiping device.

Adrian’s legal team immediately claimed Hale acted independently to retrieve privileged documents.

The explanation failed when Hale’s phone revealed direct messages from Adrian’s private assistant.

CLEAN HOUSE BEFORE HE COPIES ANYTHING.

Adrian had finally connected himself to current evidence destruction.

The confrontation should have strengthened the case.

Instead it created betrayal from another direction.

During the confusion, Evan disappeared.

So did Thomas’s USB.

Daniel checked the security footage.

Evan left through the side entrance carrying the drive in his pocket.

Vanessa looked stunned. “He wouldn’t.”

Daniel did not share her certainty.

Evan had spent ten years chasing his father’s name.

Now he possessed the single object most likely to control how Samuel Mercer’s role became public.

Twenty minutes later Daniel received a message.

DON’T COME AFTER ME. I NEED ONE NIGHT.

May you like

Evan had not stolen the USB for Adrian.

He had stolen it from everyone.
