Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Eleanor’s Family

The peace we had built inside the penthouse was threatened three weeks later by the arrival of a storm from Cameron's past.

It was a Thursday afternoon when the private elevator opened, and an elderly woman stepped into the foyer. She was dressed in an elegant black wool coat, wearing pearl earrings, carrying herself with an icy, aristocrat dignity.

It was Evelyn Vance—the mother of Cameron's late wife, Eleanor, and the grandmother of little Lily.

Evelyn was accompanied by her lawyer, Arthur Vance (who was her nephew). Her face was set in a cold, severe line as she looked around the penthouse, her eyes immediately locking onto the wooden toy chest in the corner of the living room.

I was standing near the kitchen counter holding a tray of tea, while Sadie was sitting on the rug, building a wooden block tower.

"What is the meaning of this, Cameron?" Evelyn's sharp, cultured voice rang out through the foyer.

Cameron walked out of his private study, his expression instantly hardening into a mask of cold composure. "Evelyn. You didn't announce your visit."

"I shouldn't need to announce a visit to my late daughter's home," Evelyn said coldly, stepping into the room and staring down at Sadie. "Arthur told me you had taken in a housekeeper and her child. I didn't believe him until I saw this circus with my own eyes."

I stepped forward, my instincts flaring to protect my daughter. "Ma'am—"

"Quiet," Evelyn snapped at me without looking. "I am speaking to my son-in-law."

Cameron stepped directly between Evelyn and my daughter, his tall frame blocking her view entirely. His voice was dangerously low. "Do not speak to Clara like that in my home, Evelyn. And do not look at Sadie like she is an intruder."

"She is an intruder!" Evelyn declared, her voice rising with bitter emotion. "This penthouse is Eleanor and Lily's sanctuary! You locked these doors for ten years to honor their memory! Now you've replaced them with a common servant and her bastard child!"

"Evelyn!" Cameron's voice bellowed through the penthouse like a thunderclap.

Sadie whimpered, startled by the loud voice, and ran to my side. I gathered her into my arms, hugging her tightly against my chest.

"You will leave my home right now," Cameron said, pointing a finger toward the elevator, his body trembling with violent rage. "If you ever insult Clara or Sadie again, I will sever every financial endowment the Hale family provides to the Vance Foundation."

Evelyn's jaw tightened, her eyes flashing with venomous pride.

"You think this child is a blessing, Cameron?" Evelyn sneered, pulling a manicured hand up to adjust her collar. "You think she magically appeared to save your soul? She's using you! Her mother is using you for your money, just like every other opportunist who comes near you!"

"That is enough, Aunt Evelyn," Arthur Vance interjected quietly, looking terrified of Cameron's rising fury. "We should go."

Evelyn looked past Cameron, her cold blue eyes fixing onto Sadie with pure hatred.

"This isn't over, Cameron," Evelyn whispered. "My daughter and my granddaughter deserve their memory preserved. I will not let you drag their legacy through the mud for a housekeeper."

She turned and marched back into the elevator, Arthur following closely behind as the brass doors slid shut.
