Chapter 11 - The Gala of Shadows

The formal debut of our new life occurred at the annual Seattle Children's Hospital Gala—the most prestigious philanthropic event of the year, held in the grand ballroom of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel.
It was an event where the city's old money, corporate tycoons, and high-society elites gathered. And this year, everyone was whispering about Cameron Hale's sudden emergence from ten years of dark reclusion.
I wore a floor-length emerald silk gown, my hair styled in an elegant updo, with the Hale family sapphire necklace resting against my chest. Cameron looked magnificent in a custom black tuxedo, holding my arm with possessive, fierce pride as we walked down the grand staircase into the ballroom.
A hush fell over the crowd as we entered. Cameras flashed furiously. Journalists scribbled in notebooks.
"Look at them," I whispered to Cameron, feeling nervous under the intense scrutiny of two hundred high-society guests. "They're staring."
"Let them stare, darling," Cameron murmured in my ear, pressing a gentle kiss to my temple. "You are the most breathtaking woman in this room."
As we moved through the crowd, accepting congratulations from corporate executives and city officials, a cold voice interrupted us near the champagne fountain.
It was Evelyn Vance, dressed in heavy purple velvet, standing beside three influential board members of Hale Global Logistics.
"Cameron," Evelyn said loudly enough for surrounding guests to hear. "How bold of you to bring your new... hostess... to an event that Eleanor founded twelve years ago."
The surrounding guests went quiet, sensing the high-stakes dramatic confrontation.
Cameron didn't flinch. He tightened his arm around my waist, looking at Evelyn with cool, lethal composure.
"Eleanor loved this charity, Evelyn," Cameron said smoothly, his voice carrying across the silent circle. "Which is why tonight, Clara and I are announcing a ten-million-dollar personal donation to construct the Lily Hale Pediatric Wing at the new hospital downtown."
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Evelyn's face flushed with anger. "You dare use my granddaughter's name to elevate this woman?"
"I use my daughter's name to heal children, Evelyn," Cameron replied, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Something you have failed to do for ten years while hiding behind your bitter grief. And Clara is not just my hostess. She is my fiancée."
My heart leaped in my chest. He hadn't publicly announced it until this exact second.
The crowd erupted into hushed whispers and congratulations. Evelyn Vance stared at us, her mouth opening and closing in utter humiliation, before she turned on her heel and fled the ballroom.
Cameron looked down at me, a brilliant, breathtaking smile breaking across his handsome face.
"Fiancée?" I whispered, my heart fluttering wildly.
"If you'll have me, Clara," Cameron murmured, pulling a velvet ring box from his pocket and opening it to reveal a flawless five-carat diamond ring. "Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure joy spilled over my lashes as I looked at the man who had transformed our lives.
"Yes," I sobbed happily, as he slid the ring onto my finger and pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss amidst the thunderous applause of the ballroom.
