Chapter 10 - The Secret in the Vault

Two weeks later, Cameron invited me into his private study for a matter that had nothing to do with house coordination or legal filings.
He walked over to the grand bookshelf in the corner, pulled a leather-bound book, and revealed a hidden digital wall safe. He typed in a long passcode, scanned his thumb, and the heavy steel door clicked open.
Inside lay a single velvet box and a set of old journals.
"I want to show you something, Clara," Cameron said, pulling the velvet box out and laying it on the desk between us.
He opened the lid. Inside lay a breathtaking diamond necklace—a vintage piece of platinum set with brilliant blue sapphires that sparkled like ocean water under the desk lamp.
"This was the Hale family heirloom," Cameron explained softly. "My grandfather bought it in Paris in 1940. It was meant to be passed down to the eldest daughter of each generation."
"It's magnificent," I breathed, admiring the craftsmanship.
"When Lily was born," Cameron said, a soft smile touching his lips, "I placed this in the safe for her. I wrote a letter to be given to her on her eighteenth birthday, along with this necklace."
He reached into the box, pulling out a sealed yellow envelope with faded handwriting that read: For my darling Lily, on her 18th birthday.
"I spent ten years thinking this letter would sit in a dark safe forever," Cameron whispered. "A promise to a girl who never got the chance to grow up."
He looked up at me, his dark eyes shining with a profound, emotional clarity.
"Yesterday, I called my estate planning attorney," Cameron continued softly. "I modified the Hale Family Trust. Fifty percent of my corporate holdings and private assets will be placed into an irrevocable trust for Sadie when she turns twenty-one."
I gasped, taking a step back, shocked by the sheer scale of his declaration. "Cameron, no! That's billions of dollars! You can't just give that to my daughter—"
"She isn't just your daughter anymore, Clara," Cameron said, stepping around the desk and taking my hands in his. "She saved my life. She gave me back my purpose. Everything I build from this day forward is for you and her."
He picked up the vintage sapphire necklace, gently lifting it from the velvet lining.
"And this," Cameron whispered, walking behind me and draping the cool platinum chain around my neck, fastening the lock behind my hair, "belongs to the woman who holds my heart."

I looked at my reflection in the dark window glass. The blue sapphires sparkled brilliantly against my collarbone, but what moved me to tears was the warmth of Cameron's arms wrapping securely around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"We are going to build a real family here, Clara," Cameron murmured against my neck. "I promise you."
