Chapter 8 - The Criminal Indictment

The hammer fell six months after Claire walked out.

I was sitting in the cramped, one-bedroom apartment I was renting above a dry cleaner on the east side of the city. My bank accounts were operating under strict court monitoring, allowing me a stipend of twelve hundred dollars a month for basic living expenses while the FCA and the Justice Department completed their joint investigation.

There was a sharp, loud knock at the door.

When I opened it, two uniformed federal marshals were standing in the hallway, accompanied by an agent wearing a dark blue windbreaker with the letters FBI printed in gold across the chest.

"Daniel Mercer?" the lead agent asked, pulling a laminated badge from his pocket.

"Yes?"

"I’m Special Agent Miller with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have a warrant for your arrest on twelve counts of federal wire fraud, misapplication of institutional funds, and filing false financial statements."

The world seemed to lose all sound. I stood frozen in the doorway as one of the marshals stepped forward, turning me around and pulling my hands behind my back.

The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked tightly around my wrists.

"You have the right to remain silent," Agent Miller read from a small card as they led me down the narrow carpeted stairs toward the street. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As they loaded me into the back of the unmarked sedan, a local news van pulled up across the street. A cameraman leaned out the side door, his lens focused straight on my face as I was pushed onto the low vinyl seat.

I caught my reflection in the dark tinted window of the sedan. My hair was graying at the temples, my skin was pale and sallow, and my eyes were filled with the hollow, terrifying realization that there was no way out.

The life I had spent ten years constructing on a foundation of lies, arrogance, and entitlement had finally collapsed completely—and I was buried under every single brick.
