Chapter 4 - The Mirage of Samantha

Driven by panic, humiliation, and the sudden realization that my corporate accounts were locked, I got into an Uber and gave the driver the address to Samantha’s luxury apartment building downtown—the very condo I had signed a two-year lease for six months ago under Mercer Global Holdings.

I needed a haven. I needed someone to tell me that this was just a temporary setback, that we could figure this out together once the legal dust settled.

I slammed the elevator button for the twelfth floor, stepping out into the carpeted hallway. I didn't even knock; I used my key to unlock the door and walked inside.

Samantha was sitting at her quartz kitchen island, wearing a designer silk robe, holding a cup of espresso. Sitting across from her was a young man in a grey suit holding a clipboard.

"Daniel?" Samantha gasped, standing up quickly, her eyes darting between me and the man beside her. "What are you doing here? You usually call before coming over during the day."

"The firm froze my accounts, Samantha," I said, my voice ragged as I stepped into the apartment. "Claire knows everything. She drained the joint accounts, she seized the car, she filed an emergency injunction against the firm."

Samantha’s expression didn't soften with sympathy. Instead, her eyebrows drew together in a sharp, calculating line.

"What do you mean she froze the accounts?" Samantha asked, her tone dropping into a flat, defensive register. "What about the lease for this place? The quarterly rent payment was due yesterday."

I stopped in my tracks, looking at her as if seeing her clearly for the first time. "The lease? Samantha, my entire career is collapsing! I’m facing an FCA investigation!"

The man in the suit stood up, clearing his throat awkwardly. "Mr. Mercer? I’m an investigator with Vance, Sterling & Associates. Ms. Vance has been cooperating with our financial discovery process for the past forty-eight hours under a formal third-party subpoena."

I stared at Samantha, my brain struggling to process the betrayal. "You... you were talking to Claire’s lawyers?"

"They froze my personal accounts yesterday morning, Daniel!" Samantha snapped, tossing her hair back with a bitter laugh. "They showed me the paper trail. You lied to me! You told me that firm entity was your private investment vehicle! You didn't tell me you were using stolen marital assets that could be clawed back by a court order! I’m not going to jail for your stupidity!"

"Stupidity?" I choked out the word. "I bought you diamond necklaces! I paid for your trips! I rented this apartment for you!"

"And now I have to vacate it by five PM because the receiver revoked the lease," Samantha said coldly, walking over to her bedroom door and pointing toward the exit. "Leave, Daniel. My lawyer told me not to speak to you without a court reporter present."

I stood in the doorway of the luxury apartment I had financed with my family's future, listening to the door slam shut in my face.
