Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

I arrived at the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Mercer & Hayes in a hailed cab, my hands clammy and my collar tight around my neck. The lobby was quiet, but the atmosphere shifted the moment I stepped out of the elevator onto the thirty-fourth floor.
The receptionist didn't look at me. Two associates sitting at the end of the hall immediately lowered their heads, whispering into their phones.
I walked straight into Conference Room A.
Sitting at the head of the long oak table was Richard Hayes, flanked by our firm’s chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance—who also happened to be the senior partner of the law firm representing Claire. Sitting beside Arthur was Claire herself.
She wore a sharp, navy tailored suit I had never seen before. Her dark hair was pulled back into a flawless, low chignon. She looked composed, radiant, and entirely unbothered by the storm raging around us. There were no dark circles under her eyes, no signs of tears, no trace of the exhausted young mother I had dismissed as unperceptive and weak.
"Claire," I breathed, taking a step toward her. "Claire, please. We need to talk about Hope. Where is our daughter?"
Claire didn't flinch. She slowly raised her eyes to meet mine, her expression as cold and smooth as polished marble.
"Hope is with my sister, Daniel," she said, her voice steady and clear. "And you will speak to me through my counsel."
Arthur Vance slid a thin black tablet across the table toward me.
"Mr. Mercer," Arthur said smoothly. "Pursuant to the emergency order issued by Judge Miller at six o'clock this morning, your access to Mercer & Hayes’ operational databases has been suspended pending the completion of a full independent audit."
"You can't suspend me!" I raised my voice, looking at Richard. "Richard, I own thirty percent of this firm! My name is on the front door!"
"And your thirty percent has been placed in temporary court receivership to secure the six million dollars in marital assets you attempted to conceal in Nevis and the Cook Islands," Richard said, refusing to look me in the eye. "Daniel, you used firm infrastructure to commit wire fraud. The board held an emergency session an hour ago. You are being placed on unpaid administrative leave effective immediately."
"This is my life!" I slammed my hand onto the conference table. "Claire, you're destroying my career!"
May you like
Claire leaned forward slightly, resting her hands flat on the mahogany surface.
"No, Daniel," she said softly. "You destroyed your career when you decided that your family was a convenience and your marriage was a cover story. I am simply auditing the wreckage."
