Chapter 11 - The Ring on the Roof
The rooftop helipad had been transformed.
A clear, heated glass dome had been constructed over the center platform, filled with hundreds of twinkling white lights, warm heaters, and fresh white roses that perfumed the crisp winter air. Outside the dome, the entire skyline of Boston glowed like a sea of diamonds under the clear, starry night sky.
A small table sat in the center of the dome, holding two glasses and a bottle of vintage champagne.
I stood in the center of the warm glass sanctuary, taking in the breathless beauty of the view. "Jack... this is incredible."
Jack stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin against my temple as we looked out over the city together.
"Six months ago," Jack began softly, his deep voice rich with emotion, "I sat in that lobby downstairs feeling completely alone. I was carrying the weight of a violent, corrupt family legacy that I hated, trying to find a way out before it destroyed me."
He turned me around gently to face him.
"And then a girl with a navy blazer sat beside me, noticed I hadn't eaten, criticized my tie, and gave me half her turkey sandwich," he smiled, a tear glimmering in his eye. "You didn't just save my company, Emily. You saved my soul."
Jack sank down onto one knee on the warm floor of the dome.
He pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket, opening it to reveal a magnificent oval-cut diamond set in a simple, elegant band of platinum.
"Emily Carter," Jack said, looking up at me with pure, unvarnished devotion. "Will you do me the honor of marrying me, and building a clean, beautiful future together?"
Tears of pure happiness spilled over my eyelashes as I looked down at the man who had stolen my heart.
May you like
"Yes, Jack!" I wept happily, dropping to my knees beside him and throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, a thousand times yes!"
He slipped the ring onto my finger and pulled me into a passion-filled kiss under the glowing lights of the Boston skyline.
