Chapter 7 - Landing Without Him

A year later, Morgan Ridge completed the Denver project.
The supplier remained with us after our audit proved the forged agreement had never been authorized. I rebuilt the logistics team, strengthened system controls, and refused the board’s offer to hide the scandal.
I told them transparency would cost less than another betrayal.
Chloe later sent me a brief apology. She did not ask for forgiveness. She admitted that she ignored obvious lies because Ryan promised her the life she wanted.
I never responded.
Ryan contacted me once after the divorce became final.
He wrote that he still remembered my face in the airplane aisle. He said he had never seen me look so cold.
He was wrong.
I had not become cold.
I had become clear.
For months, he used tenderness to distract me while stealing my work, damaging my reputation, and preparing a future with another woman.
At thirty thousand feet, the performance ended.
I did not scream.
I did not beg.
I simply removed every authorization he had mistaken for ownership.
The next time I flew to Denver, I sat in first class.
