Chapter 1 - Row Fourteen

At thirty thousand feet, I discovered my husband had lied about more than where he was flying.
Ryan told me he was leaving Boston for Portland. I was headed to Denver after a construction supplier suddenly threatened to abandon a seventy-million-dollar project my company had spent two years building.
Before boarding, I texted him.
Safe flight. Love you.
His reply came immediately.
Love you too. Boarding for Portland now.
I settled into the window seat in row fourteen, exhausted from weeks of fixing problems Ryan kept calling “nothing to worry about.” I had nearly fallen asleep when I heard his voice near first class.
“Take the window seat, babe.”
My body went rigid.
Ryan stood beneath an overhead bin in a navy blazer, lifting a suitcase for Chloe Bennett, his blonde secretary. She wore a cream sweater and looked at him with the relaxed intimacy of a woman who had stopped worrying about being discovered.
Ryan placed his hand on the back of her seat while she sat down.
Not professional.
Not accidental.
Familiar.
I stayed in row fourteen and watched.
After takeoff, Chloe rested her head against his shoulder. Ryan covered her hand with his. When a flight attendant offered a blanket and casually referred to Chloe as his wife, Ryan smiled and accepted it.
He did not correct her.
Something inside me went silent.
I stood, straightened my cream blouse, and walked toward first class.
Ryan saw me only when I stopped beside his seat.
All the color left his face.
Chloe jerked her hand away.
“Going to Portland?” I asked.
“Claire… I can explain.”
I glanced at their joined hands on the armrest.
Nearby passengers stopped talking.
Then I smiled.
“Your replacement wife looks younger than I expected.”
Ryan leaned forward.
“Please don’t do this here.”
I reached into my purse and removed my phone.
“Too late.”
May you like
Then I called the one person Ryan never expected me to involve.
“Cancel every authorization under his name.”
