Chapter 4 - THE SON HE MADE IMPOSSIBLE

Detectives obtained Mark’s financial records after the hospital documented the attack and the group messages were preserved.

There were no fertility clinics.

No hormone prescriptions.

No genetic testing.

The invoices Mark sent his parents had been assembled from altered medical templates and receipts downloaded from websites. The seventy-two thousand dollars had moved through an account opened under the name Mercer Family Planning Services.

It was not a clinic.

It was Mark.

He used the money to cover gambling losses, credit-card debt, and payments on a failed property investment he had hidden from me.

The deepest betrayal came from a urology record dated four months after Emma’s second birthday.

Mark had undergone a vasectomy.

He told the physician that our family was complete and requested that no appointment reminders be mailed to the house.

For nearly three years afterward, he accepted money from his parents by promising them a grandson he had privately made impossible.

He let Diane blame me.

He let Frank joke that my body was defective.

He watched me absorb every insult while using their obsession to finance his debts.

Two weeks before the attack, Frank discovered an inconsistency in one of the forged clinic invoices. Mark needed someone else to become responsible before his parents demanded their money back.

He created a story in which I had secretly taken the funds and refused further treatment. He told them I mocked their desire for a grandson and planned to leave before they could confront me.

Then he prepared a document stating that I had controlled the fertility account, canceled the treatment, and used the remaining money for personal expenses.

The paper was found folded inside his truck.

There was a blank line for my signature.

Mark expected his family to terrorize me until I signed it.

The backyard attack was not a burst of anger.

It was collection pressure.

My body was the negotiating table.
