Chapter 3 - WHY HE REALLY CALLED THEM

Nurse Parker documented every name and timestamp while Dr. Harris read the messages without touching the phone.

I told them the truth from the first kick to the moment the backyard disappeared.

No excuses.

No softened words.

No family version.

Voices rose in the hallway before I finished. Diane was demanding to see me. The door opened two inches before Nurse Parker stopped it with her body.

My mother-in-law’s face appeared in the gap.

“Before you destroy this family,” she said, “ask your husband why he really called us there.”

Mia pressed the cracked phone against her chest.

Diane glanced at it, then lowered her voice.

“He told us you stole seventy-two thousand dollars.”

I stared at her.

“What money?”

“The fertility fund.”

There was no fertility fund.

After Emma’s birth, Diane began pressuring us to try again for a boy. I always refused to discuss my body with her. Mark told me he handled the conversations and asked his mother to stop.

According to Diane, he had done the opposite.

For three years, Mark accepted monthly transfers from his parents, claiming the money paid for fertility specialists, hormone treatments, genetic testing, and future procedures intended to produce a male child.

He showed them appointment summaries.

He sent copies of invoices.

He told them I demanded privacy because I was ashamed.

Then, two weeks before the attack, Frank asked to see the clinic’s full payment history. Mark said I had canceled treatment, emptied the account, and threatened to take the girls away if he exposed me.

Diane believed the money was gone because of me.

That did not excuse what she did. Nothing could.

She was not confessing out of conscience.

She was trying to move herself one step farther from the center of the crime.

“Mark said you would admit everything once we frightened you,” she whispered.

“What was I supposed to admit?”

“That you spent the money and refused to give the family another chance.”

I looked toward the closed door.

Mark had not gathered them only because they wanted a boy.

He needed witnesses to a confession he planned to force me to make.
