Chapter 4 - Preparing the Table

At eight fifteen, I photographed my injuries beside that morning’s newspaper.
At eight thirty, a doctor documented the bruising, rib tenderness, and marks around my wrist.
At nine, the building manager preserved hallway footage showing Daniel entering the apartment angry the previous night and leaving calmly the next morning.
At nine twenty, I called Detective Lena Ortiz.
Years earlier, I helped trace assets in a fraud case she investigated.
She never forgot it.
“I’m ready,” I said.
“Are you safe?”
I looked at the makeup bag on the bathroom floor.
“For the first time, I think I am.”
Lena told me not to confront them alone.
I explained that Vivian expected lunch at noon and Daniel believed I would behave.
That confidence made the meeting useful.
With Lena’s approval, I placed a small recorder beneath the makeup brushes.
The apartment already had a doorbell camera and security system, but neither captured the dining-room conversation clearly.
The recorder would.
I also invited someone else to lunch.
Miriam Shaw, counsel for Daniel’s company board.
She had been reviewing unexplained vendor payments for weeks.
I sent her the Hawthorne records at ten thirty.
Her answer arrived seven minutes later.
Do not warn Daniel. Preserve everything.
By eleven, the roast was in the oven.
The table was set.
Vivian’s favorite white flowers stood in the center.

Everything looked perfect.
That was exactly what they expected from me.
