Chapter 2 - The Night Before

The argument began because Vivian wanted to move in.

Not temporarily.

Permanently.

She owned a six-bedroom mansion forty minutes outside the city, but she claimed it felt too large after her husband died.

What she wanted was control.

She wanted Daniel and me to sell my apartment and move into her home, where she could supervise our schedules, finances, meals, and eventually our children.

I refused.

The apartment had belonged to me before the marriage.

I bought it after eight years of working as a forensic accountant, tracing hidden assets for divorce cases, fraud investigations, and corporate disputes.

It was the first safe place I had ever owned.

Vivian called that selfish.

Daniel called it disrespectful.

The first blow knocked me against the bedroom door.

Afterward, he stood over me breathing hard.

“Stop making me choose between you and my mother.”

He went to sleep within minutes.

I sat on the bathroom floor until dawn with a cold towel pressed to my cheek.

At seven, Daniel appeared showered, shaved, and calm.

He placed a department-store bag beside the sink.

Inside were foundation, powder, concealer, lipstick, and brushes carefully selected to match my skin.

“My mother’s coming for lunch,” he said. “Cover all that up and smile.”

For one second, I stared at him.

Then I smiled.

It frightened him more than tears would have.

“What?”

“Nothing. I’ll make lunch.”

He kissed the uninjured side of my face before leaving.

“Make Mom’s favorite roast.”

I waited until the elevator doors closed.

Then I photographed every bruise.
