Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW BOX

Marcus froze. The raw power holding him against the dirt was unyielding—an iron clamp that promised to snap his shoulder joint if he moved so much as a fraction of an inch. His face was buried in the grass, his chest heaving, his arrogance completely shattered in front of twenty witnesses.

"I'm... I'm down," Marcus managed to choke out, his voice trembling with sheer panic.

Jessica held the lock for one more precise second, ensuring his compliance, before smoothly releasing his arm. She stood up in a single, fluid motion, stepping back two paces to give him space while maintaining her balanced, defensive stance.

She smoothed down the front of her olive tank top and adjusted her brown ponytail, her breathing as calm and regular as if she had just taken a walk around the block.

Marcus pushed himself up slowly onto his hands and knees, spitting out blades of grass, staring at the dirt beneath him in total disbelief. He couldn't even look up at the family members who were staring at him in stunned silence.

Behind them, through the wide, open glass patio doors, the setting sun illuminated the wall inside the house. Mounted prominently in the hallway was Marcus's custom shadow box— filled with shiny, commercial military-style badges, fake elite pins, and cheap trophies he had bought online to construct his tough-guy persona.

Near the picnic tables, an older male relative in his late sixties—wearing a faded navy blue veteran cap with gold lettering—slowly pushed his chair back.

He wasn't looking at Marcus groveling on the lawn.

His eyes were locked squarely onto Jessica.

The old veteran’s face was deathly pale. His hands, weathered by decades of hard work and service, gripped the edge of the wooden picnic table so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Jessica felt the weight of his gaze. She turned her head slowly, her dark eyes meeting those of the old veteran across the yard.

The veteran slowly rose to his feet, his chair scraping loudly against the concrete patio.

"That movement..." the veteran rasped, his voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of awe and recognition.

For the first time since the party had begun, Jessica’s calm, unreadable expression cracked. Her eyes widened slightly, a flash of genuine caution crossing her features.
