Chapter 10 - THE UNSPOKEN SHIELD

By nine o'clock, the backyard was entirely empty save for the quiet rustle of the summer leaves and the soft glow of the patio lights.

Inside the house, through the open glass doors, Marcus could be seen standing on a wooden chair in the hallway. With slow, humbled hands, he unhooked the ornate shadow box from the wall, wrapped it in a dark blanket, and placed it away inside a closet, out of sight forever.

Jessica stood on the back porch, leaning against the wooden railing beside the American flag hanging from the post.

Her mother walked out to join her, wrapping a warm cardigan around her shoulders against the cool night air.

"Are you leaving early tomorrow, Jessie?" her mother asked softly, looking out at the quiet lawn.

"Yes, Mom," Jessica replied gently, placing an arm around her mother's shoulders. "Early flight back to Washington."

Her mother looked up at her daughter's calm, handsome profile—the high ponytail, the steady gray eyes, the quiet strength that had protected their family tonight without a single drop of blood or anger.

"Do you love your job, Jessie?" her mother asked softly.

Jessica looked out into the dark suburban night, her mind drifting to classified tarmac runways, dark briefing rooms, and the unsung heroes who kept the country safe while the rest of the world slept peacefully in their suburban homes.

"I do, Mom," Jessica said softly, a faint, proud smile touching her lips. "I keep things in order."

And under the quiet light of the summer stars, the true guardian of the household stood watch, her secret intact, her strength absolute, and her identity forever shielded behind the mask of an ordinary life.
