Chapter 7 - The Real Target

The sabotage was more deliberate than a damaged cable.
Investigators found the brake bypass, altered pressure readings, and a timer attached to the alarm-delay circuit. The failure had been designed to occur during a high-speed turn, when the suspended frame would swing toward the ship’s communications module.
That module contained recent operational-routing updates.
Destroying it would have appeared to be an equipment accident.
But the ship’s backup data would have shown something Miller desperately needed hidden.
For months, he had been falsifying cargo-maintenance records and approving parts from an unauthorized supplier. Several components were counterfeit. Payments passed through a business owned by his brother-in-law. Junior sailors who questioned the parts were reassigned, threatened, or written up for performance failures.
The crane was supposed to destroy the evidence.
Miller had also planned to blame the malfunction on a junior technician who had already reported him twice.
Senior Chief Brody sat in the investigation room beside Evelyn while sailors gave statements one at a time.
The first sailor could barely speak.
The second brought copies of messages.
The third described Miller forcing crews to sign inspection sheets before work was completed.
Then came the young technician selected to take the blame.
“He told me accidents happen to people who don’t understand loyalty,” the sailor said.
Brody lowered his eyes.
He had known Miller was a bully.
He had not understood the scale.
Evelyn did not comfort him with easy words.
“You saw fear in your crew,” she said. “You mistook silence for stability.”
Brody nodded.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Do better with what you know now.”
That was all.

Accountability was not humiliation.
It was responsibility that survived discovery.
