Chapter 6 - Admiral Vance

Brody ordered the security team to hold position.

“Hold. Nobody touches her.”

The crane assembly snapped against its safety restraint.

Sparks jumped from a damaged contact point, but the suspended frame stopped before crossing the personnel lane. Damage-control sailors isolated power and stabilized the load.

Evelyn kept Miller pinned until security secured both his hands.

“Miller knew before the alarm sounded,” she said.

Miller twisted toward Brody.

“She’s lying. She’s a contractor.”

Evelyn released him and stood.

The torn coveralls hung loose at one shoulder. Coffee stained the front. Her knees throbbed from the mess-deck fall.

None of it reduced the authority in her posture.

Brody studied her again.

Years earlier, as a young chief, he had seen Evelyn Vance speak during a fleetwide casualty review. She had been younger, dark-haired, and wearing stars.

The eyes were the same.

He straightened instinctively.

“Admiral Vance?”

Several sailors turned.

Evelyn reached inside the waterproof inner pocket of her coveralls and removed a sealed credential wallet. She opened it only long enough for Brody and the security lead to verify.

“Rear Admiral Evelyn Vance,” she said. “Fleet readiness inspection authority.”

The security sailors shifted their attention fully toward Miller.

Brody’s shock became discipline.

“Admiral Vance… command is yours.”

Evelyn looked at the crane.

“Secure the control panel. Preserve every component. Freeze all maintenance logs from Miller’s division for the last six months.”

Then she looked toward the stunned sailors.

“And nobody retaliates against anyone who gives a statement.”

That order produced the first real movement in the crew.
