Chapter 2 - The Mess Deck

Twenty minutes earlier, Evelyn had been carrying a metal tray through the USS Fletcher’s mess deck.

Her gray coveralls were oversized and stained from three days of maintenance work. Her silver hair was tied back without ceremony. No name tape appeared above her chest. No insignia marked her shoulders.

That was the point.

To the crew, she was an elderly civilian contractor assigned to observe galley logistics and maintenance flow during a classified readiness inspection.

Only the captain and two people ashore knew her real identity.

Evelyn had requested anonymity after receiving a series of reports that did not match one another. Safety checks were being completed too quickly. Equipment faults vanished from records. Junior sailors transferred out after submitting complaints. One name appeared repeatedly in informal statements.

Petty Officer First Class Jaxson Miller.

Officially, Miller supervised deck maintenance and cargo operations.

Unofficially, he controlled his section through humiliation.

He stood near the mess entrance when Evelyn passed, talking loudly to two younger sailors. He stepped backward without looking, then turned as if she had caused the collision.

“Watch where the hell you’re going, old woman!”

His forearm struck her shoulder.

The tray flew.

Hot chili and coffee spilled across the deck and over her coveralls. Evelyn hit both knees against steel, pain shooting up her back.

The room fell silent.

Miller looked down at her.

“Are you deaf or just stupid?”

No one moved.

That silence told Evelyn more than any official report had.

The crew was not surprised.

They were trained not to react.
