Chapter 6 - The Locked Case

Laurel took Caleb and Emma home before the fireworks began.
Aaron followed separately.
For most of the drive, nobody spoke.
At home, Caleb stood in the hallway.
“Were you really an office Marine?”
Laurel looked at him.
“Yes.”
His face fell slightly.
She continued.
“I also commanded people. Trained units. Served overseas. The desk was part of the job, not the whole job.”
“Why didn’t you tell Uncle Derek?”
“Because the truth does not become more true when he approves of it.”
Caleb nodded slowly.
“Then why did you show him today?”
“I didn’t.”
Laurel crouched slightly so they were eye level.
“I showed you that saying no matters.”
That evening, she opened the locked case in her closet for the first time in years.
Inside were medals, command photographs, citations, and letters from Marines who had served beneath her.
She did not spread them across social media.
She showed them to her children.
Not as proof that she was dangerous.
As proof that strength could be quiet without becoming passive.
Aaron stood in the doorway.
“I failed him today.”
Laurel did not soften the truth.
“Yes.”
“I thought staying quiet would stop things from getting worse.”
“That is what I told myself for years.”
He looked toward the case.
“Are you leaving me?”
“I haven’t decided.”
Aaron nodded.
For once, he did not ask her to solve his fear for him.
Laurel required family counseling and individual counseling before she would discuss moving forward.

An apology was necessary.
Change required more.
