Chapter 2 - The Office Marine

Laurel had served twenty-two years in the United States Marine Corps.

Her family believed most of that time had been spent behind desks.

She never corrected them.

The official photographs they saw showed Laurel in clean uniforms beside conference tables, command boards, and base offices. She rarely discussed deployments and never displayed the commendations stored inside a locked case in her closet.

When relatives asked what she did, she said logistics and planning.

That answer was true.

It was simply incomplete.

Laurel retired as a lieutenant colonel after years of leading teams in places where one bad decision could strand people far from help. She had trained in defensive tactics, extraction procedures, and operational command.

None of that interested Derek.

He had served one enlistment as a supply corporal and spoke about those years as though he had personally managed every conflict in modern history.

At family gatherings, he called Laurel the office Marine.

He joked that her greatest battlefield injury came from a printer jam.

The first few times, Laurel ignored him because she did not need his approval.

Then the jokes became permission.

Derek mocked her retirement pay.

Questioned whether she had earned her rank.

Told Caleb that his mother could not teach him toughness because she had never done “real work.”

Aaron always said the same thing afterward.

“He’s only joking.”

Laurel mistook avoiding conflict for protecting the family.

And Caleb began watching his father stay quiet whenever another man disrespected his mother.
