Chapter 4 - The Man Who Stayed Silent

After Laurel released him, Derek scrambled to his feet.

“You attacked me.”

“You grabbed her first,” Caleb said.

The yard went silent again.

Derek turned toward the boy.

Laurel stepped between them.

“Do not look at him. Look at me.”

Aaron finally approached.

“Laurel, maybe everybody should calm down.”

She faced her husband.

“Our son was pushed to the ground by an adult.”

“I saw.”

“And you did nothing.”

Aaron lowered his voice.

“I didn’t want things getting out of control.”

Laurel looked toward Derek.

“They were already out of control.”

Mallory began crying.

“This is a family barbecue.”

Laurel nodded.

“That is why Caleb should have been safe here.”

Derek rubbed his wrist dramatically.

“You’ve been waiting years to embarrass me.”

“No,” Laurel said. “I spent years preventing you from embarrassing yourself.”

Elaine asked everyone to sit down.

No one moved.

Then Caleb spoke quietly.

“Dad, why didn’t you help me?”

Aaron’s expression collapsed.

He looked at his son but could not produce an answer that did not reveal the truth.

He had been afraid of conflict.

Afraid Mallory would blame Laurel.

Afraid Elaine would become upset.

Afraid Derek would challenge him.

So he allowed his thirteen-year-old son to carry the discomfort instead.

Laurel had tolerated insults directed at herself.

She would not tolerate her children learning that family peace required their humiliation.
