Chapter 6 - Evelyn’s Last Letter

The final envelope was heavier than the others.
Daniel opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a letter written in Evelyn’s neat script.
Daniel,
I knew why you married me.
Not every detail at first, but enough.
I knew you were frightened, homeless, and desperate. I also knew you looked at my house with more love than you looked at me.
That hurt.
I considered asking you to leave.
Instead, I waited to see whether safety might turn you into the man you pretended to be.
Sometimes it did.
You sat beside me during treatments even when you believed I was asleep. You repaired Mrs. Bell’s steps without charging her. You carried my groceries when your own back was hurting. You laughed honestly in the garden.
Those moments were not part of your plan.
They were you.
I did not leave you the house because a house received through waiting would keep you trapped in the worst version of yourself.
I paid the debts because they existed before me.
I arranged the apprenticeship because it belongs to what comes after me.
You believed you wanted money more than anything.
You wanted freedom.
Now you have it.
What you do with it will tell me whether I was foolish to love you.
Evelyn
Daniel lowered the letter.
For years, he had believed himself clever enough to fool an elderly widow.
In reality, Evelyn had seen both men inside him.
The one counting her final days.
And the one she still believed might learn to live differently.
Her relatives had expected the box to humiliate him.
Instead, they watched Daniel cover his face and weep for the first time since her death.
May you like
Not for the house.
For the woman who knew the worst truth about him and still tried to save whatever remained.
