Chapter 3 - The Kindness He Counted Against Her

Evelyn never treated Daniel like an employee.

She remembered how he took his coffee. She kept the hallway light on when his late shifts ran past midnight. When the soles of his work boots split, she replaced them without asking.

The new pair appeared beside his chair one morning.

“You’ll break your neck wearing those old things,” she said.

When winter came, she bought him a coat and hung it near the front door.

“You’re going to freeze in that old thing.”

She never made her kindness sound like a debt.

Daniel received it as strategy.

Every doctor’s appointment sharpened his attention.

Every prescription bottle on the counter reminded him that Evelyn was older.

He began researching property taxes, probate rules, and home values. He learned which renovations would raise the house’s resale price. He knew the balance of her savings account because he once saw a statement on the desk.

He did not steal from her.

He told himself that distinction made him decent.

But he watched her life like a countdown.

Sometimes Evelyn caught him staring.

“What are you thinking about?” she would ask.

“The future,” he always replied.

She would smile sadly.

“So am I.”

Daniel believed they meant the same thing.

They did not.
