Chapter 2 - The Arrangement in His Head

Daniel was twenty-five when he met Evelyn Hayes.

He was broke, buried beneath medical debt from his father’s final illness, and working temporary construction jobs that disappeared whenever the weather changed. His credit cards were maxed out. His truck was two payments from repossession.

Most nights, he slept behind a twenty-four-hour supermarket and washed in the restroom before dawn.

Evelyn was seventy-one.

She lived alone in a modest brick house on a quiet street outside Richmond. Her husband had died eight years earlier. She volunteered at a community pantry and spent Saturday mornings tending roses along her front walk.

Daniel first met her when he repaired a broken fence for a contractor who never paid him.

Evelyn noticed the split soles of his boots.

She noticed he ate the sandwich she offered too quickly.

She noticed he sat inside his truck for nearly an hour after finishing the job because he had nowhere else to go.

A week later, she hired him to repair the kitchen cabinets.

Then the porch rail.

Then the leaking gutter.

Daniel began accepting dinner after work.

When Evelyn suggested he use the guest room until he “got back on his feet,” he agreed before she finished the sentence.

Three months later, she asked him to marry her.

Daniel said yes.

But in his head, the marriage became a plan.

Stay.

Be patient.

Act devoted.

Wait for the house.

He told himself Evelyn wanted companionship and he needed stability. It was an exchange between two lonely people.

That explanation helped him sleep.

It did not make it true.
