Chapter 6 - The Side Nathan Never Saw Coming

The doctors took me inside immediately.
No courtroom.
No argument in the lobby.
No dramatic showdown while my babies needed care.
Lucian made one call, and suddenly Nathan’s attorneys were not allowed past the waiting area without hospital counsel present.
A nurse squeezed my hand and told me the babies still had strong heartbeats.
I cried then.
Not prettily.
Not quietly.

I cried like a woman who had been holding the world together with wet fingers and finally had permission to let go for one minute.
Hours later, the contractions eased.
The danger had not vanished, but it had stepped back.
Lucian waited outside my room.
I did not understand why.
When he entered, he kept his distance.
“My legal team is already reviewing the threat Nathan sent you,” he said. “So is hospital privacy counsel.”
“Why?” I asked.
He paused.
Then said, “Because my sister died fighting a man like him.”
The room went quiet.
Lucian looked toward the rain-dark window.
“She was pregnant. Wealthy husband. Powerful lawyers. Everyone told her to be reasonable. By the time we understood how far he would go, it was too late to protect her peace.”
His jaw tightened once.
“Not again.”
For the first time, I saw the truth behind his power.
It was not just control.
It was grief that had learned how to wear a black coat and make phone calls senators answered.
I held the blanket over my belly.
“I don’t have money to fight Nathan.”
Lucian looked at me.
“You don’t need his kind of money. You need evidence, protection, and people who don’t scare easily.”

Then he placed his private number on the table.
“This time, he picked the wrong woman to corner.”
