Chapter 4 - The Message From Nathan

The screen lit up in my wet hand.

A blurred image loaded first.

Nathan.

Standing inside a private hospital lobby with three attorneys behind him, all holding legal folders.

Then the message appeared beneath it.

I know you’re carrying triplets now. You won’t be leaving that hospital with my heirs.

The word heirs made my blood turn cold.

Not babies.

Not children.

Heirs.

Property with heartbeats.

My hand began to shake.

Lucian read the message over my shoulder.

His expression did not change loudly.

It became colder.

That was worse.

“Is he the father?” Lucian asked.

“Yes.”

“Has he known?”

“No. I hadn’t told him yet.”

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

“Then someone in that attorney’s office sold your medical information.”

The thought made me feel sick.

Another cramp tightened through me, and I bent forward with a gasp.

Lucian turned to his driver.

“Private hospital. Now.”

The SUV pulled into traffic with the other vehicles close behind.

Rain hammered the roof.

I clutched my belly and tried to breathe through the pain, through the fear, through the impossible thought that Nathan had already started calling lawyers before he called me.

Lucian sat beside me, silent but present.

Not touching unless I needed support.

Not asking foolish questions.

Not telling me to calm down like panic was a personal failure.

When the hospital lights appeared ahead, warm gold behind glass doors, I saw Nathan standing under the entrance canopy.

Waiting.

May you like

With attorneys.

Like a man arriving to claim luggage.
