Chapter 7 - Next Time, Listen Before You Laugh

By the end of the afternoon, the official tournament results were almost beside the point.

Thorne was removed from live instruction pending review. His prior training incidents were reopened. Several soldiers who had stayed quiet before finally agreed to give statements.

Nora remained near the pit while the field emptied.

A young private approached her with his helmet tucked under one arm.

“Chief Hayes?”

She turned.

“I laughed,” he said, ashamed. “At the beginning.”

“I heard.”

“I’m sorry.”

Nora studied him for a moment.

Then she nodded.

“Remember why you did it.”

He looked confused.

“Because he laughed first,” she said. “That’s how bad leaders spread.”

The private swallowed.

“Yes, ma’am.”

As the sun lowered over Fort Harden, Thorne stood near the medical tent, still humiliated, still trying to look angry enough to hide the truth.

Nora picked up her gear and walked past him.

He did not speak.

For once, he seemed to understand that silence was safer.

Nora paused anyway.

She looked at him one last time.

“Next time,” she said quietly, “listen before you laugh.”

Then she walked out of the arena.

Behind her, the dirt pit was settling back into stillness.

But the soldiers who had watched would not remember the dust.

May you like

They would remember the moment a man laughed at a woman who told the truth.

And the silence that followed when she proved it.
