Chapter 5 - The Field Changes Sides

Thorne rolled onto one elbow, breathing hard.
His eyes were full of the kind of fury that comes when a man realizes his audience has witnessed the exact opposite of what he promised them.
Nora rose smoothly.
No celebration.
No smile.
No glance to see who admired her.
That was what unsettled them most.
She fought like someone who had nothing to prove to people who had already judged her.
The referee looked between them.
“Winner,” he said, voice still rough with disbelief, “Chief Petty Officer Hayes.”
For a second, nobody clapped.

Then one soldier near the back started.
Slow.
Careful.
Another joined.
Then another.
The sound spread, not wild or joyful, but respectful. Uneasy. Honest.
Thorne pushed himself up, jaw working.
“This is garbage,” he snapped. “She got lucky.”
The clapping stopped.
The referee’s face hardened.
Master Sergeant Calvin Rhodes, the tournament coordinator, stepped into the pit from the side. He was older, weathered, and not a man known for wasting words.
“Sergeant Thorne,” he said, “you were warned twice.”
Thorne pointed at Nora.
“She came in here claiming SEAL status with no proof.”
Nora looked at him once.
Still calm.
Rhodes turned toward the command table.
“Read the roster.”
An officer holding a clipboard hesitated, then cleared his throat.
“Chief Petty Officer Nora Hayes. Attached under joint training evaluation authority. Verified.”
The field absorbed the word.
Verified.
Thorne’s mouth closed.
May you like
Nora did not look satisfied.
Only tired.
