Chapter 6 - The Notebook
The command review continued after training ended.
Maya provided her notebook.
She also provided copies of medical evaluations, time records, and messages from trainees afraid to report Cross directly.
Cole did not treat every complaint as automatically true.
He verified them.
The medic confirmed the heat-illness incident.
Supply records showed Cross had signed out replacement equipment after forcing recruits to continue using damaged gear.
Training logs revealed repeated extra drills assigned almost exclusively to older recruits, smaller soldiers, and anyone who questioned inconsistent results.
The most damaging evidence came from Cross himself.
In messages to another instructor, he described Maya as someone who needed to be “broken before she poisoned the kids with confidence.”
He joked about making recruits afraid to visit medical staff.
The other instructor had saved the conversation.
Cross argued that strict training created resilient soldiers.
Cole disagreed.
“Standards create resilient soldiers,” he said. “Humiliation creates silence.”
Maya was asked why she had waited so long to speak publicly.
“I didn’t,” she answered. “I reported it through the chain.”
The company commander looked down.
