Chapter 1 - Pick Up the Bag

The black rucksack lay open in the red Texas dirt.
A field manual had fallen beside it. A steel flask rested against another recruit’s boot. Dust still drifted through the brutal afternoon sunlight.
Maya Reed stood motionless on one side of the bag.
Master Sergeant David Cross stood on the other.
Forty recruits watched from formation behind them.
Cross leaned closer and pointed toward her face.
“You want to give me orders now?”
Maya did not blink.
“Pick. My. Equipment. Up.”
A soldier in the second row swallowed hard.
Cross’s expression turned colder.
For four weeks, he had decided who spoke, who rested, and who became an example. Maya had accepted every extra drill without complaint.
He believed her silence meant submission.
“You forgot who runs this formation.”
Maya glanced briefly toward the recruits, then returned her eyes to him.
“No, Sergeant. I remembered who still has discipline.”
Cross took another step.
Before he could answer, a voice came from behind the formation.
“Sergeant Cross, pick up the bag.”
Every recruit turned.
Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Cole walked across the training yard with the company commander beside him. Neither man looked surprised by what he had found.
Cross froze.

Maya remained perfectly still.
The rucksack lay between them like evidence.
