Chapter 6 - The Arrest Outside the Glass
The arrest happened in the same hallway where Daniel had once expected to intimidate me into silence. Detective Keene asked Vanessa one final question: was she willing to turn over her phone? Vanessa stared at Daniel for a long time before nodding. She unlocked it with trembling fingers and handed over texts, voice notes, and photos of cash deposits Daniel had called “consulting income.” One message stopped everyone. Daniel had written, If Emily gets suspicious, use your condition. No one argues with a sick pregnant woman. Vanessa folded in on herself after that. She had lied, yes, but she had also been played. Daniel turned toward me like he still expected me to save him from the consequences of his own voice. “Emily, say something,” he demanded. So I did.
“I will,” I said. “I’ll say exactly what you said to me. That an adult with a future mattered more than your daughter.” He went white. The officers moved in after Detective Keene read him the charges they could file immediately: diversion of controlled hospital assets, insurance fraud, child endangerment, falsification of patient records, and conspiracy pending further review. He struggled once—not dramatically, just enough to show the panic beneath the polish—and shouted that I was destroying our family. Dr. Bennett answered before I could. “No, Mr. Carter. You did that when you treated your child like inventory.” As they led him away, Vanessa stayed against the wall, crying into both hands. She looked at me and whispered, “I didn’t know about Lily.” I believed that part. I didn’t forgive her, but I believed it. “Then help finish this,” I said. “Tell them everything.” She nodded, and that was the last thing Daniel saw before the elevator doors closed on him.
