Chapter 1 - The Call Beside the ICU Bed

I was holding Lily’s tiny hand in the ICU when my husband called and told me he had chosen another woman over our daughter’s life. Two days earlier, our eight-year-old had collapsed at school and been rushed to St. Matthew’s with her autoimmune condition raging through her body. She needed an expensive injectable medication on schedule, every schedule, because one missed dose could send her organs into crisis. Daniel knew that better than anyone. He was a senior pharmacist for the hospital network. So when I told him Dr. Bennett said Lily’s medication had not been delivered, I expected excuses, maybe lies. Instead, he gave me the truth like it was nothing. “I canceled it,” he said. Then, with the kind of cold impatience he used whenever I got too close to catching him, he added, “I redirected the remaining doses. Vanessa needed them. She’s worth more to me than that little girl.”
For a second I forgot how to breathe. Vanessa Cole was his assistant, the woman he had spent months insisting was “just staff.” I stared at Lily’s pale face, at the oxygen tubing, at the monitors, and I understood that the affair had never been the worst thing about my husband. The worst thing was how calmly he could weigh a grown woman against his own child and call it logic. I whispered, “You gave our daughter’s medication to your mistress?” He sighed like I was exhausting him. “Don’t be dramatic. Vanessa is an adult with a future. Lily’s already in the ICU. If anything happens, the doctors will handle it.” That was when Lily’s monitor shrieked. Nurses rushed in. Dr. Bennett came fast behind them, took one look at the dropping numbers, and said, “We need that medication now.” I covered the phone and repeated every word Daniel had just said. Dr. Bennett’s face changed from urgency to shock, then to something colder. He took the phone from my hand, put it on speaker, and said, “Mr. Carter, your daughter may not have until next week.” On the other end, Daniel went silent just as a nurse shouted, “She’s crashing!”
