Chapter 17 - THE SON SHE DID NOT ASK FOR

Vanessa gave birth before sentencing.

The boy was named Owen Cole. She did not give him Daniel’s last name.

Her attorney sent the information through Dana because Vanessa wanted Lily to know she had a half brother before someone else used the fact to surprise her.

I waited until Dr. Marsh helped me prepare.

Lily listened without interrupting.

“Is he sick?” she asked.

“No.”

“Did Daddy give him medicine?”

“No.”

“Does he live with Daddy?”

“Daddy is in jail. Owen lives with Vanessa’s sister while Vanessa’s case is decided.”

Lily looked down at her safe people list.

“Is he my family?”

“He shares a biological father with you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She was becoming too perceptive for easy language.

“He can be family if someday that word feels safe and true to both of you. Blood does not decide the whole relationship.”

“Do I have to meet him?”

“No.”

“Does he know about me?”

“Not yet. He is a baby.”

Lily was quiet for several minutes.

Then she asked whether Owen would grow up thinking Daniel was a good father.

“I don’t know what Vanessa will tell him.”

“Will you tell him?”

“Not unless he asks when he is older and you agree.”

She nodded.

“None of this is his fault.”

“No.”

“It isn’t mine either.”

“No.”

That answer mattered more.

Daniel had created two children whose lives would be connected to his choices in completely different ways. Lily nearly died because he took what her body needed. Owen entered the world after both parents helped build the operation that caused it.

Neither child owed the other repair.

Vanessa received a seven-year sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy, healthcare fraud, and falsification. Her cooperation, pregnancy, and evidence against Daniel reduced the term, but the judge refused probation.

At sentencing, Vanessa spoke about Owen.

The judge stopped her.

“Your concern for your child does not erase the child endangered by your conduct.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

Later, she sent one message to Lily through the victim coordinator.

I am sorry.

Lily chose not to read the rest.

She placed the sealed page inside a box in Dr. Marsh’s office labeled NOT NOW.

Not never.

Not forgiveness.

May you like

Not obligation.

Just a place where someone else’s remorse could wait without entering her childhood before she invited it.
