Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Lie
Carol requested a meeting two weeks later.
Emily agreed only because Rachel and a mediator were present.
Carol looked older than she had in the hospital. The polished confidence she carried into every family gathering was gone.
“I never meant for him to accuse you after the birth,” she said.
Emily held Lily against her shoulder.
“When did you want him to do it?”
Carol lowered her eyes.
“I thought if you separated, the accounting review might stop.”
“You tried to destroy my marriage to hide stolen money.”
“I was desperate.”
“So was I when I had just given birth.”
Carol began crying.
Emily felt no satisfaction.
Only distance.
Carol admitted creating the anonymous messages, selecting photographs, and telling Mark that wives who became financially independent often prepared to leave. She knew exactly which insecurities to feed because she had raised them in him.
But Mark had not been innocent.
He had transferred funds.
Used Emily’s company card.
Hidden records.
Then accepted a lie because it placed Emily on trial instead of him.
The mediator asked whether Emily would consider resolving the matter privately.
Emily looked at Carol.
“Repayment can be discussed privately.”
Then she looked toward the financial report.
“Accountability cannot.”
Carol’s real-estate business entered liquidation. Several properties were sold. The proceeds repaid part of the missing money.
Mark signed an agreement acknowledging the remaining debt.
