Chapter 5 - The Test

The DNA test was performed.

Not because Emily needed it.

Because she wanted the accusation destroyed permanently.

Hospital staff documented consent, collected samples, and transferred them through an accredited laboratory. Emily’s attorney ensured the process could not later be dismissed as informal or manipulated.

Mark remained convinced the result might save him.

He told himself that if Lily was his, Emily would calm down.

She would understand that fear had overwhelmed him.

They could discuss the money later.

Carol knew better.

The marriage had not ended because of a laboratory result.

It ended when Mark looked at his exhausted wife and chose humiliation over one honest question.

The result arrived four days later.

Probability of paternity exceeded 99.99 percent.

Lily was Mark’s biological daughter.

He called Emily immediately.

“I was wrong.”

Emily sat in her mother’s guest room with Lily asleep beside her.

“Yes.”

“I was scared.”

“You were cruel.”

“My mother sent those messages. She made me believe—”

“You chose to believe them.”

“I’m Lily’s father.”

“Biology does not erase what you did.”

Mark’s breathing became uneven.

“We can fix this.”

Emily looked toward the folder Rachel had left on the table.

Divorce petition.

Emergency financial restraints.

A report documenting the diverted company funds.

“No,” Emily said. “We can document it.”

Then she ended the call.
