Chapter 1 - Thirty Minutes After Birth

Thirty minutes after giving birth, Emily Carter expected her husband to cry.

Nurse Dana stopped beside the monitor.
Emily stared at him.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
His voice was flat.
“That baby might not be mine.”
In the corner, Carol Carter became completely still. Her coffee cup remained halfway to her mouth.
Emily looked down at Lily.
Something inside her broke, but it did not become panic.
It became clarity.
She reached for the phone on the tray table and called Rachel Bennett, the attorney who handled contracts for Emily’s consulting firm.
When Rachel answered, Emily said only one sentence.
“Prepare the divorce papers.”
Mark stepped backward.
Carol rose from her chair, trembling.
“Oh God,” she whispered. “He doesn’t know.”
Emily slowly turned toward her.
Mark stared at his mother.
“Know what?”
Carol covered her mouth.
