Chapter 7 - Nolan Loses the Women He Counted On
Nolan was arrested on assault-related charges first.
The bigamy investigation followed.
Then financial complaints from Marisol began moving again because now law enforcement knew exactly where he was. Avery’s family filed civil action to recover wedding deposits and money Nolan had solicited under false claims. The jeweler confirmed Nolan had used borrowed funds and partial payment from Leah’s old loan to purchase Avery’s ring.
That ring became evidence too.
Vivian blamed everyone except Nolan.
She blamed Leah for exposing him. Avery for being disloyal. Marisol for not “letting the past stay dead.” Detective Price for making private matters public. The attorney for manipulating a fragile family. Even Leah’s father for not “speaking up correctly.”
He finally did speak.
Not loudly.
Not bravely enough to erase years of silence.
But in a sworn statement, he admitted Nolan struck Leah, Vivian praised it, and the family had known for months that Marisol existed. He also admitted Vivian instructed him to say Leah fell.
Leah read that statement in her attorney’s office weeks after surgery, her leg in a brace, crutches beside her chair.
She did not cry.
Her father called later.
“I should have done more,” he said.
“Yes,” Leah answered.
“I was afraid of your mother.”
“I was afraid too.”
He had no response to that.
Sometimes apologies do not heal because they arrive carrying the proof that the person understood enough to know better.
Vivian sent one message through a cousin.
You chose strangers over your blood.
Leah almost replied.
Then she looked at the group text from Avery and Marisol. Two women who had every reason to hate each other, now sharing information through attorneys, protecting themselves from the same man.
Strangers had done what blood refused to do.
